The service is based on a very simple principle: in the modern world, most air carriers install special ADS-B transmitters on their vehicles. They transmit signals at a certain frequency during flight, and these signals can be intercepted and decoded with the help of the simplest equipment - an RTL-SDR receiver. Connected to a computer, it allows you to convert aircraft signals and transfer them to a map to get exact coordinates in real-time mode.

Over time, the number of volunteers who joined the service in all countries became so large that it made it possible to obtain objective and timely data about most of the planet's airspace and about those planes that fly in it. The Flytradar network currently covers most of Europe, North America, and South America, and operates in the countries of Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Australia. The Middle East, South Africa and the Atlantic islands are not forgotten.

How does Flyradar work?

We described the initial working principle of this web service above, but over time, its device became much more complicated.

In general, Flytradar24 receives signals from planes online, converts them into graphic format - and provides users with complete information about air traffic in the world.

For this, data taken from three surveillance systems are used: ADS-B, FAA and MLAT. Due to three sources, information is recorded even from those boards that are not equipped with transponders.

  1. Coordinate fixation system using Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast. ADS-B transponders today account for more than half of the world's aircraft fleet, and this number is constantly growing, as this technology is now considered the main control system. During the flight, each aircraft equipped with such a transmitter positions its coordinates in the air with the help of GPS satellite geolocation technology, after which it transmits them continuously via a transponder. On the ground, Flytradar24 employees and volunteers track them with the help of receivers, transcribe and transfer them to a map on the website or to a mobile application. Currently, the Flightradar project's receiver fleet includes more than 9,000 receivers located around the world. Each of the receivers receives a signal at a frequency of 1090 Hz with a coverage of up to 400 km. The coverage may vary depending on the natural curvature of the planet. In general, with the help of receivers, coverage is provided over all of Europe, America, Canada, the countries of the Caribbean basin, the Japanese islands, mainland Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The exception is the space above the oceans, where the signal reception range is simply not enough. But here two other tracking systems used in the project come to the rescue.
  2. MLAT technology allows receiving signals from old-style transponders (Mode A/C). It uses self-developed FR24 receivers. To obtain objective data, the signal from the aircraft must be received by four such devices at once (multilateration principle). This becomes possible during a flight at an altitude of more than 10,000 feet. The higher the aircraft is, the more likely it is to track the plane. With the help of MLAT, today the territory over part of European countries and the space over North America is processed.As the company's receiving devices are produced, the MLAT network will be expanded.
  3. FAA is the third of the involved systems for tracking flying objects. This information comes from the American Federal Aviation Administration. That is, this is information from official radars located on the territory of America. It is especially important because it allows you to get the coordinates of those civilian flights that are not equipped with ADS-B transmitters. In addition, the long-range radar makes it possible to build routes over oceans, where ordinary receivers cannot receive signals from transponders due to their remote location. The FAA has only one drawback: it is not real-time data. According to the system regulations, data is transmitted with a delay of 5 minutes. In addition, the FAA operates only in the airspace of the North American continent and over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in the northern hemisphere.

In addition, Flight Radar24 constantly receives information from spotters (people interested in photography and observing aircraft), so often the route on the map can be accompanied by photographs.

Where can I track my flight via Flightradar?

For the convenience of users, the service works in two versions:

  • A website where you can find aircraft flights in real time.
  • Mobile application with convenient functionality for working with a smartphone.

If you visit the service website, you are offered a half-hour trial session - that is, you can use FlightRadar for free for the first half hour. What planes can be tracked by Flyradar

Today, with the help of FR24, it is possible to track the majority of aircraft making private, charter and civil flights. First of all, these are all models of transport that are equipped with ADS-B: Airbus, Antonov, Boeings of all models, ATR, Suchoi SuperJet, Il and Tu of new models.

Among those types of aviation transport that do not yet have transponders installed, the service supports the location of other models of the already specified manufacturers, as well as almost all helicopters, business jets, and propeller-driven aircraft.

In addition, in the coverage area of ​​MLAT and FAA, the service receives data from absolutely all types of flying objects, regardless of the model and the presence of transponders.

The exception is flights whose information is blocked due to confidentiality and security requirements. They are not displayed on the flight map.

Flightradar in the USA

Flightradar24 is a widely used application for tracking aircraft movements, with a significant user base in the United States. The service provides real-time flight tracking information, including flight paths, aircraft types, and current positions.
